Forevercandid Photography - 2011 Year In Review!

WHAT AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR 2011 has been! A game changer. Now that I've had a little time to breath, it's time to reflect, and share a little of what this year has been like. As my official first year as a full-time photographer, I couldn't have asked for more!

"The Stats" (what it is like to be a photographer)
In 2011 I photographed 25 Weddings, 18 Engagement Sessions, 34 Kid & Family session, 8 Maternity & Senior & Fashion & Headshots sessions along with of course, a few misc events. That's approximately 90 total, or one every 4 days. That comes to approximately 250hrs of actual shooting time, 175hrs of driving time, and (in my workflow) about 2000hrs editing. That's come to about 46hrs a week - and I haven't even included consultations, administrative work (e-mails, e-mails, e-mails!), blogging... I think you get the point - as photographers - we work HARD to give you the very best! If you're thinking about making a go of photography, don't say I didn't warn you. :-)

"The Favs" (being a photographer allows me to see a lot of fun places)
Sometimes a little extra effort on mine and the clients part is all that's needed to make an engagement session go from great to WOAH. I've had the pleasure of photographing in some really unique locations this year, and I hope the trend continues, so put on your thinking caps! Some of my favorite session were at a bowling alley, in Newburyport, near the Boston's Children Museum, in the North End, at St. George's Island, and of course FENWAY PARK!! I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with this year.

"The Buzz"
This year we've been published a few times and for the 3rd year in a row own the Bride's Choice award which is given to the top 5% of all wedding vendors in USA and Canada. "The Best Part"
I say it over and over again. It's when I hear / see / or get word of the reaction to the images. Brides & grooms crying as they relive their wedding day, family members remembering loved ones who have passed on through the expressions in their own little ones, laughter over all the silly and sometimes embarrassing moments during a portrait session. I get to have fun with expressive and energetic little kids, be a huge part of the "most important day" of many couples lives, and get to know amazing people who's love for each other touches my heart.

"The future"
We kicked off the first week in Jan with a maternity session at the Beverly Public Library. Many many many newborn sessions to come (which I post on the Facebook page) and the wedding season will start up in April! Let me know if you have any blogging requests! The Biltmore Providence - Getting Ready - Ruby & Cristian Part 1

This is merely the beginning of what was a stunning - stunning - stunning (did I say stunning?) wedding. It starts out with Ruby getting ready with her girls, mother, and mother-in-law to be at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, RI. There was something simply classic about this location. I loved the light pouring in through the windows and all the details Ruby chose. And of course, the dress... my GOODNESS the dress. Check it out.

Forevercandid | Boston Wedding Photography at the Fairmont Battery Wharf

Allison and Jason had a gorgeous Boston wedding at the Fairmont Battery Wharf! It's a newer venue to Boston, right on the waterfront, and is a hop skip and jump away from the North End. The forecast was RAIN all week, but the day surprised us all and was full of sunshine! I really loved the ceremony set up, different from anything you've seen, I guarantee it. Thanks Allison, Jason, and the Fairmont for creating such a stunning event for me to photograph!

Who doesn't love a water backdrop for ceremony and formals?

Classy, classy, classy reception! I just adored the atmosphere inside of the Fairmont Battery Wharf. Allison and Jason used wine corks for their seating assignments. The deep purple color she chose for the bridesmaid dresses and tables was perfect for the venue.

Cape Cod Wedding || Pocasset & Falmouth MA || Amy & Scott part 1

Getting ready images are more often then not my favorite part of the day. I started with Amy and her bridesmaids while my second shooter Josh started with the guys at a different house. So the images you see of Scott with his guys are from Josh (thanks as usual for your great work!). Amy's color pallet of navy and the lightest of yellows was really beautiful with the tan colored suits the guys wore!

And here's the quaint wedding ceremony at the little church in Pocasset MA. I loved the seashell decor going down the aisle! Also how the program doubled as a hand fan - because BOY people needed them!

Nantasket Beach Resort || Hull MA Wedding Photography || Lisa & Michael

There aren't too many things I love more than the beach - so photographing a wedding at the Nantasket Beach Resort in Hull, MA did not disappoint! We had a beautiful September day and the tide went out at the perfect time for us to take some shots outside near and in the water. After some convincing, the groomsmen braved the water, taking off their shoes and rolling up their pants. Michael had no problem getting in, it was hot, and the cool water would feel great! The girls, including Lisa, had on super cute silver flip-flops for the wedding which accentuated the beach theme perfectly! This blog comes to you in 3 phases. I wanted to highlight the getting ready images (bright colors, natural light, pink Gucci wristlets for all the bridesmaids!!), the beach formals (of course), and some of the reception details including the must-see starfish cake topper! Enjoy...

This bride LOVES her dog - she had to be included in some of the formals!! I love how the ring bearer climbs right into the photos at one point as well.

Boston Wedding Photographer | Pink! | Steph & Jim

The fire alarm ring shot above is a perfect description of Steph and Jim - fiery!! Hurricane Irene was fierce as well - rain barely subsiding for a minute to allow a mere one minute of outdoor bride & groom images. Stephenie and Jim wouldn't let that get them down. A quick (and hysterical) wedding ceremony followed by some serious dancing! I love it when the crown gets right up on the dance floor and is ready to party. I love the pink and black theme throughout the wedding. A bold choice that not everyone can pull off - but they certainly did! Check out her pink shoes!

Rainy Garden Wedding || Harding Allen Estate || Bev & Matt

Though you've already seen what the amazingly delicious desert table looked like at Bev & Matt's wedding, I wanted to share a little more! Once again, it took place at the Harding Allen Estate in Barre MA. I had a chance to photograph some of the property before the rain started. There are vibrant florals all around the main building and also in Beverly's hair that I had to capture! We did have a chance to take some images outside after the rain passed by, but not after I put an umbrella over their heads and made them walk around for a minute or two! If you didn't see it on my facebook post -- below the images is a little piece of writing that goes along with the sentiment of rain being good luck on your wedding day!

Rain on Your Wedding Day (by unknown source)

"Rain symbolizes blessings, cleansing, unity, and a new day. In some cultures it is also a symbol of fertility. Due to these positive connotations, a rainy wedding day is very often considered good.

First of all, rain signifies blessings, and everyone wants their marriage to be blessed. Blessings speak of hope and approval. There is every reason to be optimistic when you consider all the possibilities that are ahead.

Blessings also connote prosperity, both in a material and physical sense. It is therefore considered good luck if it rains on that special day, due to the hopeful expectations of a happy life.

Rain also cleanses, ever notice how fresh and clean everywhere looks after a shower of rain. Cleansing signifies the washing away of dirt, as well as the purging of things that might have sullied or tainted in the past.

After the rain, there is a clean slate that allows you to begin afresh and anew. For those getting married, a new beginning is envisioned as they embark on their life together.

In addition, rain is a sign of fertility. Water makes things grow. Many couples have the hopeful expectation that there marriage will be blessed with children. Therefore in some cultures rain on your wedding day is viewed as a sign that the couple will have many children, and of course, children are considered a blessing.

Rain on your wedding day can also signify unity. The rationale behind this stems from the reference to marriage as “tying the knot.” It is no secret that a wet knot is much harder to pull apart than a dry one, as the water makes it harder to untie. Therefore if it rains when you are “tying the knot” it suggests unity, and the creation of a stronger bond that will not easily be broken.

Generally, rain is also considered a sign of restoration. It suggests that things that might have been considered dry or dying will regain strength, due to the rain that regenerates and brings renewal.

Rain on your wedding day is in essence a mark of fortune. It is expected that the day is the dawn of a lifetime which will spill over with good luck. As we have seen, it signifies blessings and success."

Wedding Photography | Classic Car and the Ocean | Steph & Sean | Part 2

I promised you a part 2, so here it is! I absolutely LOVE when there is ample time and a fabulous location for the "formal" images. Because we wanted to keep the land and water in the background, if you can believe it, I was actually standing on the back of a pick-up truck for many of these! Steph and Sean grew up in this area (Little Compton) and knew exactly where this little spot was. Steph's grandfather quipped about how he could take his car down on the beach (he had done it before after-all), however they probably wouldn't be able to get it back up again! We chose to park it at the top and worked around it ;-)

Engagement Session | Boston, MA | Laura & Greg

You may have noticed a HUGE trend in the wedding industry for the past year or so has been vintage. Vintage e-session, vintage themed weddings, vintage trash the dress sessions, etc etc. I really love the creativity and style couples have been putting into their big day.

Here are some images from a wedding I photographed in October. The theme was understated which I really appreciated. Definitely some vintage details - but not over the top! Enjoy!

There are SO many websites and blogs dedicated to helping you find the perfect details to create your ideal wedding. When deciding if you are going to go with a "theme" for your wedding - there's only one thing I advise. Picture yourself sitting at your coffee table in 20 or 30 years, looking through your wedding images.... what do you want to see?

Boston Wedding Photography | What's Your Style? | Bridal Party Portrait fun

What's your style?

When it comes to wedding photography, style can make or break your images. There is photojournalism, contemporary, candid, traditional....

When it comes to the bridal party and family portraits, there are a few different ways of capturing the moment! I can try to explain them - but I thought just showing you some examples from this past wedding season would do the trick! There's the classic line up, the modern groupings where the bride and groom are more of the focus, the "jump" shots where the bridal party reaches for the sky, and then there's what I like to call the group hug! Which will I do for your wedding? I don't know yet! It's really up to you. If your bridal party is a group of people who all know each other - there's most likely going to be one group hug towards the end. ;-)

This is just a small sampling of what can be done! When it comes down to it - the group formals are about YOUR style - not mine. What will reflect your day the most accurately? What will you think when you're looking at the photos 20 years down the road? Are you planning to put them on your wall? Ask yourself the questions, and we'll work together to get the best possible look and feel for your wedding images.

Winter Engagement Session | Salem, MA | Christina & Gary

While I typically avoid the cold and snow at all costs, thankfully some of my brave clients have forced me out to see the beauty in it! I think I like it better in the winter than I do in the summer!

To album or not to album?

Last week I took the time to re-design my blog. What do you think? I think the layout is cleaner, easier to read... of course knowing myself... I will probably redesign it again in another 6 months! Anyone else do that? :)

I thought since I've been making some {Wedding Wednesday} posts - I would try to blog on Wednesdays as well! So today's blog will be about... ALBUMS. To album or not to album - that IS a frequent question with today's brides & grooms! So let me share some thoughts and put out a few questions for you to answer. If you're struggling with this decision yourself, perhaps I can help you make an informed one.

Here are 10 reasons why you should (or shouldn't) purchase an album with your photography package.

1) Your coffee table needs some love. Now that you and your other half are a married couple, it's time to start entertaining other couples in your home! A question that more often than not comes up with new friends "So how long have you been married?". What a great time to say "Our wedding album is right here on the table, why don't you take a look?" Your friends will be impressed. Your wedding album tells a story that words can not.

2) No one wants to sit at your computer and look through 500+ wedding images. Even your tried and true friends and family's eyes will start to water after the first 200. Having a wedding album allows you to pick your favorite images and special moments, and share what's most important to you without boring anyone! Yes, they love you enough to look through all 500+ but let's be honest... there are few that really want to.

3) It's an heirloom. I know personally whenever I see my parents wedding album, I feel like I'm in a time machine. It's such an honor to be viewing the happiest day of their life! Your kids will want to view yours too.

4) Did I really say TEN things? This might be harder than I thought. Which leads me to #4 -- 90% of brides who say they will put together their own album do NOT actually do it. Why? Sometimes things are harder than we think. Leave it to the pros!

5) Something new, something blue, something... tangible! Today's wedding market is so very different than in the past. An album used to be a necessity. Today, it's an add on. While I realize the budget constrictions of the modern bride, it's hurts me to have a bride walk away with nothing more than the high resolution files of her wedding. Why? Because studies have shown (as I sort of alluded to above) that 90% of couples will not DO anything with their photos. This is why I try to include a gallery wrap canvas in every wedding photography package. At the end of the day you may ask yourself "What am I going to walk away with" after spending $$$$ on wedding photography? Wouldn't it be nice to say "a gorgeous custom designed wedding album!".

6) Don't forget your parents. This one is a little trickier. How much will your parents and in-laws value an album? Do they want a mini-me of your album, or one that is tailored to their favorites images instead? Remember, this is one of the happiest days of THEIR lives as well! I've found a DVD slideshow is a nice alternative here, but only if your parents are comfortable with a DVD player and or computer. Another factor to consider of course, is if they are paying for any portion of the wedding.

7) Options options options... Today's modern weddings are all about customization. Your colors, your favors, your music - it's a fun way to show your family and friends what you and your future husband or wife is about! Well creative options abound in wedding albums as well. There are different design styles and cover option that range from gorgeous silk to eco-friendly non-leathers to out-there metallic covers. If you have a secret obsession with Zebra print...

8) You get what you pay for. I'm going to step on my soapbox now. :) It's drives me bonkers when I hear (or see on forums) "well, this photographer can give me an album for $250, why can't you?". There are only two scenarios I can think of where this is possible. A) The photographer is desperate for your business and willing to LOSE money on a sale - or B) the photographer is going to deliver a product that ANY consumer could purchase and probably overcharging you for it. Yes, I know about the sites like Snapfish, and I know that CVS can make you a photo book for $20... but mark my words... those books will make my images look TERRIBLE and also - they will fall apart. If you want archival quality materials and professional design - you pay for it. 'Nuff said.

9) It's all you have. You've heard this said before... after the DJ has packed up, the cake has been eaten, and your guests have gone home... what's left to commemorate all that happened? The photography! It's recommended by many that at least 30% of your budget go to wedding photography. You can talk amongst yourselves. I obviously agree. ;-)

10) Options options options... Wait. Didn't I already use that one? Well this time it's a little different. If you DO decide to make your own album, go ahead and google "wedding albums" and see how many things come up. Slightly overwhelming right? I've done the hard part. I've spent HOURS (if not days) researching the highest quality and most unique professional wedding album companies in the country, and even outside the country. Let me make it easy for you - and save you time - so you can spend it all with your spouse in your new marriage!

Wow! That was a lot for my first wedding Wednesday blog post. Let me wrap it up here. Regardless of whether you decide to go for the wedding album or not, is totally and completely up to you. I will never run through this list at a wedding consultation (I will touch on a few brief points) or pressure you into making an expensive purchase if it's out of your budget. The nice thing about albums is that you can always decide to add them on after the wedding. After all - you're probably going to get a lot of cash!!

Last week I got to photograph this adorable little girl named Lilly! I had a great time getting to know he parents Lauren and Ray. I especially loved the stroller made by none other than JEEP they whipped out in order to get to the place we were photographing at! It's a little place called Ocean Lawn at Coolidge Reservation in Manchester by the Sea. There's only a few parking spots so we had to wait for some others to leave before we could even enter the park. A few paths and easy trails later - it opens up to a beautiful expanse of nature with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Having lived on the Northshore most of my life - it still surprises me how many places I have never seen!

Well, it took Lilly a little while to get used to her surroundings - you can even see a tear in one of the photographs below - but once we got down to those rocks she was loving it! She's a sweetie for sure. Enjoy! Thanks Lauren and Ray!

Last weekend I spent a few hours on the South Shore of MA. Two of those hours were spent with 16 members of the Scott family, 8 kids and 8 adults! We managed to get a beautiful day (the first we've had in a long while) and took advantage of the warmer temperature and sunshine. The session took place outside of the North Street Community Chapel in Hingham, MA where one of the family members (Jeremy Scott) pastors. We did a lot of formal shots, but here are some of my favorite candid photos I grabbed throughout the session.

Fix-it-Friday

I recently had a client ask me "I mean, how much do you really have to edit?". I was laughing inside. I said well we don't HAVE to edit as much as we do...

So I'm on Twitter, again, and I found a fun company called "I Heart Faces". They do a little thing called "Fix it Friday" and I joined in on the fun today! The idea is to take the photo they've uploaded (I did not take this photo - they supply it), and everyone edits to their fancy and posts it on their blog. So here is my version!

To those from the iheartfaces blog viewing - I used PS CS4 for basic lighting/color adjusments. Next a Kubota filter called blue dawn. Textures from ShadowHouse Creations.

Senior Picture & Photo Texture FUN

I've been all over Twitter lately. In just a few weeks I've found some super creative people who have inspired me with their tweets! That latest comes from my new friends at http://openscrapbook.com/. They tweeted about some free photo textures if you signed up for their mailer - OK! So here is my very first experiment with photo textures. Thanks to my best friend Kerrie for letting me use her "senior picture". She's graduating from college this year so it counts :)

I see this turning into a new hobby...

This was also probably only my second time lighting a portrait with a solo off camera speedlite. I'm going to attend a Boston conference in June completely dedicated to speedliting so if any of my photog friends want to join - give me a yell! :)

Weddings at Lynch Park Rose Garden & Beach

Living on the North Shore of MA has certain advantages. One is that I often get to photograph weddings in very beautiful coastal locations. I love the ocean, beach, sand, waves, etc.. Throw in a Rose Garden on top of those and it's pretty close to heaven on Earth in my opinion! Lynch Park in Beverly is a gorgeous choice for your wedding ceremony, or maybe just your formal photos. I thought I'd put together some of the photographs I've taken from weddings in the Rose Garden from the past couple of years. Enjoy!

Photography advice - snow, snow, snow!

Hi everyone!

With the new year, I got to thinking about what I could add to my blog that you as readers would really enjoy. Well, how about some basic photography tips? My friends and family often come to me for advice on how to operate their new digital cameras. With so many settings, options, dials, buttons, where do they start? I'll try to touch on many different issues, mostly surrounding how to work a "point and shoot" digital camera. I will also address hot topics like I am doing here today.

This morning when I woke up, I heard the wind blowing, and freezing rain hitting the side of my house. Thankfully, I don't have to drive anywhere today, but what a mess it is out there! Some friends who work in the Salem, Danvers, Peabody, Beverly area have already said the roads are terrible. Another friend mentioned on Facebook that rt128 is at a slow crawl (big surprise!). So what do my mommy friends do when the snow starts to subside, and the sun comes out? They take their kids out to play of course! So today's hot topic is - snow photography. How do you get good pictures when the sun is gleaming off the white snow, and practically blinding you, and you can no longer see your LCD screen on the camera?! A quick google search and I found this fairly simple article called Photographing Snow. I know everyone is starting at a different level when it comes to photography, so if there's anything here you have a question about, please let me know and I'd be happy to discuss it further!

Nate & Renee Prestia's wedding highlights!

Nate & Renee are a great couple and after photographing their reception - I can tell they have a lot of really great friends too! I probably took more "group shots" than in any other wedding. The venue was the DoubleTree hotel in Waltham. Enjoy!!

Renee's color choices really complemented the venue. A really beautiful ivory dress with oranges and browns in the flowers and bridesmaid dresses.

It was a night wedding, so we found some creative inside locations for our "formal" sessions. Including the enormous jacuzzi tub in the bridal suite!

I had a great time photographing Shannon & Matt's wedding at the Topsfield Commons! It was my first time at this venue, and I hope to be back next wedding season. It is very elegant, and the staff is super friendly! Well the venue certainly reflected the bride & groom. They are a great couple, really fun to work with, and really enjoyed their wedding day. Photography was important to them, but they "didn't want to miss the party" so we finished as quickly as possible! It gives me just a little insight into the bride & grooms style as well as takes care of some necessary details for the wedding day itself. I hope to be able to grab this sheet before I go to a wedding, and be fully prepared! It's just the first draft I've made - so let me know if you have any input! I'd love to hear your ideas of what questions to ask, what details you as a current or former bride would want the photographer to know etc... My first wedding is June 27th. I know- finally- a post!! It was nice to get out shooting and this time in beautiful Greensboro NC! Beth wanted pictures with a modern edge and it was so much fun finding places to shoot this style. I hope to do many more shoots like this with models, kids, etc -- I'm really happy about how they turned out!

St. Thomas wedding!

Well, the most exciting post-bridal-show news I have for you, is that I've been hired to photograph a wedding in St. Thomas this July 4th! I can't wait to go, take all the pictures, and then share them with you. It's going to be a fantastic place to photograph (even though it will be HOT) with all the scenery and beaches..

This month I was able to photograph my friend Diane's wedding! The ceremony was going to be at Lynch Park in Beverly, but unfortunately the skies opened up, and they had to use the rain location. Thankfully we took the risk and went to Lynch in between sprinkles for some formals, and it was just beautiful! Thanks Diane and Bill for the opportunity- you were both were spectacular! And thanks to my second shooter and sister Kelly for grabbing some fantastic shots! :)

Taking advantage of the *smidge* or warmer weather today, my friend Kerrie and I started on an adventure to find Tucks point in Manchester. We ended up driving down some roads that should really carry warning signs that say "your tires are sure to pop", turned around and found this little place instead. It worked out really well, except for the flocks of ducks and other birds parading the area. Kerrie took care of that quickly though, and chased most of them off. We couldn't shoot long due to numb limbs and near frost bitten fingers - but here's what we came up with!

We stumbled upon this gorgeous sunset on the way home, couldn't resist a few more shots! Thanks for a really fun day Kerrie!

This was a really fun wedding I photographed for an old high-school friend. He went away to Japan to teach for a few years, and while he was there, met the love of his life! The experience was quite unique, because none of the females in the wedding party spoke English. I used a lot of hand gestures, and Sean would translate anything I needed to say!
